Scalloped Tomatoes

6 medium-size firm ripe tomatoes, cut into 1/4 inch slices
1/4 cup chopped onion (I used a bit more)
3 T. chopped green pepper
3/4 t. sugar
3/4 t. salt
1/4 t. pepper (I used more)
3 cups soft breadcrumbs (I used only 2)
3 T. butter
1/2 cup shredded c sharp Cheddar cheese (I used about 1 cup)

Arrange a layer of tomato slices in the bottom of a lightly greased 2 quart casserole. Combine onion and green pepper, and sprinkle about 1/3 over the tomatoes. Combine sugar and salt and sprinkle about 1/3 over vegetables. Place a layer of breadcrumbs over mixture. Repeat layers, ending with breadcrumbs on top. Dot top of casserole with butter. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Sprinkle cheese over top: continue baking an additional 5 minutes
