Volunteer Opportunity for Families: Marin MPA Watch

AIDEN AND LENA READY TO DO THEIR MPA WATCH AT DRAKES BEACH

AIDEN AND LENA READY TO DO THEIR MPA WATCH AT DRAKES BEACH

Do you like walking on the beach? Do you want to help protect the environment?

Volunteer as a family with the Marin Marine Protected Area Watch (Marin MPA Watch) at Drakes Beach or Limantour Beach. All you need is binoculars and a love of the ocean. You’ll discover something new on every visit. At Drakes Beach, depending on the season, you’ll see Northern Elephant Seals, shorebirds, beach huts made of driftwood (kids love to play in them!), rocky tidepools, things washed ashore like jelly fish (good for squishing in rainboots) and kelp (fun to drag along the beach). You can watch for Peregrine Falcons and other birds in the cliffs and count butterflies in the flowers. If you go early in the morning, you’ll see a variety of bird and mammal tracks in the wet sand. Over time, you can learn what they are.

Take a look at the Drakes Beach photos for a sense of the rich natural diversity that awaits you on the beach

Volunteer Opportunity for Families: Native Plant Seed Collection

Help park staff in collecting native grass seed for use in park restoration and conservation projects. Open to kids age 7 and older accompanied by an adult. You’ll learn to identify native plants and learn when it’s time to collect the seeds.
