The mighty wind of April accompanied me throughout my final shift as a Winter Wildlife Docent on Sunday April 28th.

We could see numerous squalls slowly moving across the ocean which gave us plenty of time to huddle under an umbrella and protect the scope from getting wet before each squall hit.

Read MoreFor the first time all season, I was posted at Drakes Beach - the headquarters of the Winter Wildlife Docent program. The beach remains closed due to elephant seal breeding activity however when docents are present, the beach parking lot is open from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Visitors can get an exceptional view of elephant seals from the parking lot.

All the rumors are true. The Winter Wildlife Docent program is an outstanding volunteer opportunity! With three days of training completed in the fall, I was feeling mostly ready to start volunteering on my first shift on January 25th.
