Tide Pool Safety

Protect yourself and tide pool inhabitants by following these simple safety guidelines.

  1. Observe things where you find them. Never remove marine life, rocks, shells, seaweeds, or plants from the tidepools.

  2. Do not move inhabitants from one area to another. Why does this matter? Even slight differences in water temperature and habitat can kill marine organisms. The motion of being moved can kill them. You may be separating them from their family.

  3. Do not poke anemones. They survive out of the water by keeping their moisture. Poking them causes them to lose moisture.

  4. Walk gently, taking care to avoid stepping on marine life or seaweeds.

  5. Do not roll rocks. Organisms living on the underside of rocks can only survive there.

  6. Be aware of the wildlife around you and try to minimize disturbances.

  7. Be careful! Tidepools and rocky shorelines are slippery, and tides and waves can catch you off guard. Never turn your back on the ocean.
