California is home to more than 5,000 native plant species and over 700 recorded bird species, yet habitat loss, development, and invasive plants threaten this biodiversity.
This presentation will explore the relationship between native plants and birds—and how home gardens can help restore habitat. Participants will learn how native plants provide food, shelter, and nesting opportunities, along with practical guidance for planning, planting, and maintaining a garden suited to local conditions.
The program will also introduce birds commonly found in California yards, parks, and open spaces. Attendees will leave with useful tools and inspiration for creating landscapes that support birds and other wildlife.

Benny Isaac Jacobs Schwartz is the founder of BIRDS by BIJS, a bird-guiding company and lifestyle brand connecting people with nature through birds. With more than 15 years of experience as a naturalist, expedition leader, and international bird guide, he has led birding adventures across North and South America. He is also an educator and photographer who encourages people to slow down, observe nature, and discover the joy of birding.
