Join Bay Nature and Jaclyn Schneider of Branching Out Adventures for a tidepooling outing on Thursday, January 29 from 12:30pm - 3pm at Duxbury Reef near Bolinas. Jaclyn will lead our small group through the rocky intertidal zone in search of marine invertebrates. Join this (very) small group outing to look for sea stars, nudibranchs, mollusks, and more, and explore what lives at our Bay Area beaches. There's alway something new to learn and see on a trip to the tidepools, particularly on a low tide afternoon! Tickets are free for Bay Nature Members.
Meet Your Hike Leaders:
Jaclyn Schneider (she/her/hers) is a Chicanx, Indigenous, Queer, ocean enthusiast, educator, and marine scientist. Jaclyn is a marine scientist dedicated to promoting equity and access to coastal spaces through education, promotion, fundraising, and inclusive hiring & outreach practices. Her expertise lies in marine ecology, environmental education, community engagement, stewardship, and diversity initiatives.
Jaclyn currently serves on the board of Branching Out Adventures, an org whose mission is to celebrate queerness through community, education, and connection to the outdoors. Recognizing the positive impact of nature on mental and physical well-being, BOA aims to address the barriers faced by the LGBTQ+ community in accessing outdoor recreation. These barriers include historical and ongoing exclusion, the threat of violence, financial constraints, and the current political climate.
Meet up Location: Meet up in the Agate Beach Parking Lot. 350 Ocean Pkwy, Bolinas, CA 94924. Google Maps Link.
Length and difficulty: Approximately 1-2 miles, gently sloping hard packed dirt trail with some sloping stairs leading to the tidepools. To explore the tidepools we will be walking over uneven and slippery terrain. Be prepared to bend down and kneel to explore the tidepools closer.

Weather Note: This event is rain or shine but we will reschedule or cancel in the event of unsafe weather or ocean conditions. Please keep an eye on their email inboxes the week of the event for any weather updates. Staff will do a weather check in the days leading up to the event and will update as necessary.
Access to restrooms and water: There is a bathroom and a sink for water, but plan to bring your own water bottles. At times the bathrooms can be closed, so plan to use the restroom beforehand.
Other notes:
Shoes with very good traction (this is important for avoiding slipping in the tidepools), for example waterproof boots or old tennis shoes
Warm, Water, and Windproof layers (a vest, a beanie, gloves, etc.)
Sun protection
Your fully charged smartphone with the iNaturalist app installed. Please make a free account prior to arriving if you plan to record your observations
Hiking poles to assist with balance if needed
Knee pads for kneeling over to look in the tidepools
Hand lenses and/or binoculars are welcome
Water and snacks
Bring a water bottle, warm layers, snacks, sun protection, and binoculars if you have them. Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes are recommended, hiking poles if helpful. No dogs are allowed on Bay Nature hikes. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entirety of the hike.
