Birding 202: Enjoying Birds at Point Reyes

This class will expand on the concepts and skills covered in Birding 101. However, anyone who wants to improve their birding skills can sign up for this class.

Participants will learn ecological associations―why certain birds are found in specific habitats and not others. Identification of more challenging groups including distant raptors, female ducks, and shorebirds, as well as sparrows, flycatchers, thrushes,(LBJs or “little brown jobs”) will also be a focus.

This class will first visit the forested habitat near Bear Valley to enjoy a variety of woodpeckers, warblers and flycatchers where the songs and calls of forest birds will also be covered. Then we will move to the wetland habitats of Abbotts Lagoon or Limantour to view ducks, waterbirds, and raptors.

Bird behavior and identification will be our focus during a series of short walks at these destinations. The class will meet at the picnic area near the Bear Valley Visitor Center.

David Wimpfheimer is a professional naturalist and biologist. For thirty-five years David has pursed his passion, natural history of the America West. He enthusiastically shares his extensive knowledge about all aspects of the natural world with many groups including Smithsonian Institution, California Academy of Sciences, Road Scholar and Oceanic Society.
