Living with Lions program expands to Marin County

The Living with Lions program, started in 2016, has expanded into Marin County. On March 18, Dr. Quinton Martins, lead investigator for the program captured an 8-yr-old, 140-pound male lion in the Lagunitas area. P60, dubbed “Pangui” by the residents where the puma was captured, was fitted with a GPS tracking collar to study his movements.

Martins is keen to collar additional lions in Marin. Residents who spot a lion on their security or wildlife camera, lose livestock to a mountain lion, or find a freshly killed deer are encouraged to contact Quinton Martins at quinton@truewild.org / 707-721-6560 or Marin resident Carolyn Whitesell at cawhitesell@ucanr.edu / 650-224-4679.

Over the past decade, the program has followed 40 collared big cats and their offspring in Sonoma County, adding to a growing understanding of how lions are faring throughout the state.
