No Straws, Please!

Two local West Marin third graders are taking on an important issue -- advocating for reducing plastic use to keep plastic out of the ocean. Specifically, they are encouraging businesses in Point Reyes to offer alternatives to plastic straws. Some businesses have already ditched plastic straws. Hog Island Oysters has been using paper straws for years.

As someone who cares deeply about the proliferation of plastics in the ocean, I was inspired by the "No Straws, Please" campaign launched by Viola and Reese. They are asking people to sign their pledge to remind your waiter, "No straw, please".* Commit to using eco-friendly reusable straws like metal, bamboo, glass, or paper when you want a straw at home, and Bring Your Own Straw (BYOS).  You'll be joining thousands across the U.S. in pledging to reduce single-use plastics that end up in our marine environment.

The West Marin Environmental Action Committee is sponsoring the girls' project. Read more about it and take the pledge.

And here's another good resource to learn more about the movement to eliminate single-use plastic straws, The Last Plastic Straw.

Thank you, Viola and Reese!
