The Muddy Hollow and Coastal trails make for a diverse route including some beach walking along Drakes Bay. Naturalist David Wimpfheimer will lead this wonderful five-mile loop hike near the coast.
Many birds here, including flycatchers, warblers and wrentits are at the peak of nesting activity. The song of the Swainson's Thrush is an especially iconic sound of this riparian habitat. While that zone shelters the distinctive tall hedge nettle attracting Allen's Hummingbirds with an abundance of pink flowers. Lingering scoters, cormorants, terns and other seabirds are inhabitants of the rich offshore zone. Harbor porpoise, dolphins and other cetaceans are always possible.
Paintbrush, lupine and other wildflowers are still blooming in the coastal scrub hills. The hike includes a small elevation gain and some beach walking. Meet at Limantour Beach.
